Is Rotterdam worth a visit after the ferry crossing?

The Stena Line ferry brings you to Hoek van Holland, a coastal village near the entrance to Rotterdam’s harbour. From there, you can easily reach Rotterdam by car or public transport. But is Rotterdam worth staying in, or should you skip it altogether?

While Amsterdam is by far the most popular city in the Netherlands among tourists, Rotterdam has a lot to offer as well. It certainly provides a different experience for those who have already visited Amsterdam.

Rotterdam, a major port city situated at the confluence of several rivers, has a strikingly modern city centre due to the devastating German bombing during World War II, which led to the Dutch surrender. Despite its contemporary skyline filled with high-rises, remnants of history remain, particularly in the charming Delfshaven district and the historic Oudehaven, as seen in the image below.

So, Rotterdam is a modern city, which means there is plenty of impressive contemporary architecture. You’ll find several museums and many fun things to do. It’s also a great place to visit with kids. There is a beautiful zoo, and a harbour tour is awe-inspiring.

Additionally, Rotterdam serves as a great base to explore the rest of the Netherlands, thanks to its excellent transport connections. Spending a night or two in Rotterdam before continuing your journey can be a great option. We personally love Hotel New York. The hotel offers a unique experience and is a great starting point to explore the city. You can even take a fast water taxi to get around.

To summarize

If you appreciate modern architecture and want to experience a different vibe in a Dutch city, Rotterdam is worth a visit. A trip to Rotterdam also combines well with visits to other cities or regions in the Netherlands. And, as mentioned, it’s a family-friendly destination.
